Metro Toronto Bylaw No. 371-2010

The city of Toronto has enacted Bylaw No. 371-2010 (Municipal Code, Chapter 442) that allows The Toronto Fire Department to charge Toronto residences a high administration fee to respond to false fire alarms. The fee is $ 410.00 per Fire Truck and often up to three fire crews and trucks are dispatched to each call.

There are a number of simple and inexpensive improvements that can help minimize the chance of potential false fire alarms while at the same time maintaining a high level of fire protection for your home.

1. Have your outdated Smoke detector(s) replaced with new models. It is recommended that all smoke detectors be replaced every ten years.
2. Have your alarm System updated to include the latest fire detection technology.
3. Clean your existing fire/smoke detector units by vacuuming, especially after home renovations including painting.
4. Wrap the units in plastic before beginning any work in the house to prevent dust damaging the sensors.
5. Make sure your call list is updated and give us temporary key holders and call lists when going away on vacation for verification.
6. When on vacation have a trustworthy friend or neighbor check in on the house.
